THE SHORT STORY
Twelve hits and six runs were not enough as Queens University of Charlotte fell 10-6 at home to the University of North Florida in Atlantic Sun action tonight at The Stick. The Royals tallied four runs in the final two innings, but it was not enough as North Florida held on to take game one of the weekend series.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- North Florida took an early 4-0 lead in the top of the second when it pushed four runs across on five with all the hits being singles.
-
Matthew Suppa cut the lead to three when he belted a solo home run to make it 4-1 in the bottom of the third.
- The Ospreys added a run in the fourth off a home run and a run in the fifth from an RBI single to take a 6-1
- Queens started to chip away at the lead when
Anibal Rivera drove in
Hunter Huneycutt in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 6-2 game.
- North Florida got the run back in the seventh as it pushed its lead to 7-2, but in the eighth, the Royals loaded the bases on three straight singles from Huneycutt,
Grayson Childers, and Rivera. Huneycutt then scored off
Thomas Mathay's RBI fielder's choice to cut the lead to 7-3. Childers was able to move to third on the play as Rivera was out at second. A passed ball allowed Childers to score and make it 7-4 before the frame ended.
- In the top of the ninth, North Florida plated a pair of runs on a two-run single to go up 9-4 and then added another run on a sacrifice fly to right field to make it 10-4.
- With the Royals down to their final three outs,
Dylan Schaefer walked to start things off and then advanced to second after Huneycutt struck out swinging. He later came around to score when Childers belted a two-run home run to make it 10-6. Following a pop-up for the second out, Mathay kept the inning alive when he singled to right-center, but a fielder's choice by
Karter Wong would end the game as Mathay was out at second on the play.
