CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte softball team dropped the final game of its weekend ASUN series to West Georgia, falling 7-4 on a Saturday afternoon at The Stick.
West Georgia jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back, scoring in each of the first four innings. The Wolves were led offensively by catcher Blaire Bizette, who drove in three runs on two hits, including a two-run single in the second inning. Shelby Garrett added a two-run home run in the third, while Madison Vandergrift notched a pair of doubles and scored a run.
Dixie Sims picked up the win in the circle for UWG, pitching six innings and allowing four earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and five walks. Cadence Hardison closed out the game for her first save of the year.
Queens found its offense in the middle innings. In the third, Brooke Piper drove in a run with a double, and Taylor Jones added an RBI single to cut into the deficit. The Royals added runs in the fourth and sixth innings, but ultimately left 10 runners on base, unable to capitalize in key moments.
Freshman catcher Lauren Byrd added two hits in the outing, while Piper went two-for-three with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. Emma Frye and Lindsey DeRoeck also contributed extra-base hits.
In the circle, Jones took the loss, allowing five runs - just two earned - in one and 1/3 inning. Abby Craver came on in relief, throwing five innings holding the Wolves scoreless over the final three frames.
The loss ends the series with a 2-1 record in West Georgia's favor.
