JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. – The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team ventured back to The Volunteer State on Saturday to begin a four-game series with 25
th-ranked Carson Newman University. The Eagles held the Queens offense in check, taking both games of the doubleheader 5-0 and 7-1 from the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.
Game One: No. 25 Carson-Newman 5, Queens 0 (Seven inn.)
In the series opener, Queens got a double from
Carter Foster in the first inning, but was held hitless for the remainder of the contest as Carson-Newman starter Jake Wright tossed a complete game for the win.
After scoring one run in both the second and third innings, the Eagles opened the game up with a three-run fifth to take the first game of the day.
Caleb Staley (0-1) got his first start of the season and surrendered just one run on two hits in two innings of work.
Jeffery Maidhof made his first appearance of the year and gave up four runs on six hits with two strikeouts before We Boling finished the final inning without allowing a base runner.
Game Two: No. 25 Carson-Newman 7, Queens 1
The Eagles once again jumped out to an early lead, scoring seven runs across the game's first two innings to build a lead Queens was unable to overcome.
Anthony Molinari provided a two-out RBI single in the ninth inning for the Royals but the rally fell short.
Carson-Newman's Brayden Cole went the distance on the mound, striking out a career-high 10 batters in the win.
For Queens, Molinari was 2-for-4 with an RBI and
Anthony Orta was 2-for-4 as well. On the mound, the Royals used eight different arms with
Zach Kelly proving to be the most efficient with two perfect innings of relief with two strikeouts.
The series concludes tomorrow with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at Noon.
