Hot Hitting Pushes Royals Past Bulldogs

CARY, N.C – The Queens University of Charlotte softball team found an 8-0 shutout win over Barton College on Friday, March 03, 2017. The victory moved Queens to 11-8 on the year, as they began play in the Shaw Tournament, while Barton fell to 9-8 on the season.

Three Royals rounded the bases twice as Sydney Ditto, Alyssa Strickler, and Skye Moore secured two scores during the day. Sabrina Martinez led the team in hits with three, two of which batted in runners.

Queens broke a scoreless opening to the game with a five-run third inning. Moore started the day advancing home off a single from Martinez. Ditto stole a run, advancing home, to mark the second score of the inning before Martinez took advantage of Elaina Frantellizzi's hit into center field to add another to the scoreboard. As the Royals continued to load the bases, Frantellizzi sprinted home off a dropped fly before Strickler, who had the hit for Frantellizzi, topped off the inning, coming home with help from Kelly Winter's single into the center field.

Strickler added a solo homerun, her fourth of the year over the back wall, to put the team ahead by 6-0 in the fifth. Queens added two more runs in the sixth to close out the matchup against the Bulldogs. Moore scored the first run of the inning off a bunt from Abby Lathan while Ditto tallied the game-ending run off a single from Martinez.

Courtney Pearson (8-5) secured the win for the team tallying eight strikeouts and just two hits.

The Bulldogs used two pitchers as Hannah Jones (4-1) tallied the loss going five innings for eight hits and six runs. Keeleigh Cummings came in as the relief pitcher, seeing two hits and two runs.

The Royals will face Shippensburg at 11 a.m., before adding Fairmont State to their weekend at 1:30 p.m.
