No. 6 Queens Advances with Win over Wingate

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The sixth-ranked Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team improved to 29-3 this evening with a 96-80 win over Wingate University in the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Southeast Regional. The Bulldogs complete their season at 20-11.

Mike Davis led the Royals with 25 points, while Jalin Alexander added 19 points. Ike Agusi recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 assists, while Todd Withers added 14 points. Daniel Camps totaled eight points and nine rebounds. The senior forward also entered the 1,000 point club this evening.

The Royals took a 49-33 lead into the halftime break after coming out on fire in tonight's regional quarterfinal game. Queens knocked down three triples early in the period to hold a 15-7 lead at the under 16 media. The Bulldogs responded, knotting the game at 18-18 with 13:03 to play, but a 13-0 run by the Royals would put the home team back on top, 31-18, with 9:41 left in the half. The Royals then went on to extend their lead to as much as 18 points, 49-31, before the break. Leading the way was Mike Davis, who put 21 points on the board after connecting on five-of-seven three-pointers.

Queens continued their hot shooting in the second half to complete the game at 56.6-percent from the floor and 58.6-percent from the three. By the 15:49 mark, the Royals had moved in front by 24 points, 63-39, thanks to a triple from Alexander. Wingate would pull within 13 points, 73-60, at the midway point of the half, but Queens' offense proved to be too powerful as they put nine unanswered points on the board to increase the lead back out to 22 points. Agusi was pivotal in the run scoring seven of the nine points himself. The Royals then continued to string together spurts to secure their spot in the tomorrow's semifinal.

Josh Dominguez led the Bulldogs with 27 points, while Mike Baez added 16 points. Keith Griffin totaled 11 points, and Isiah Cureton scored 10 points.

The Royals will play at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow against either Columbus State or Augusta. Keep up with the action here.
