BRADENTON, Fla. – Queens University of Charlotte's
Nikia Squire of the women's track and field team grabbed her second national title this year winning the long jump at the NCAA DII Outdoor Track and Field Championship this evening. With the win Squire becomes the first student-athlete to win a national championship in a field event in Queens history.
Squire would jump for a mark of 6.47 meters on her first jump of the day to claim the longest jump in the country at the DII level this season. Her jump was also a new school record in the event. She would then go to compete in the 100 meter dash prelims taking first overall with a time of 11.42, advancing to Saturday's finals. Squire is the favorite in the race with a seed time of 11.36.
Additionally, the now six-time all-American raced in the 4x100 meter relay prelims along with
Milan Golding,
Sarai Hayes and
Mystique Ro finishing 13
th with in 48.70.
Vincent Schneider also competed for the Royals completing the first half of the decathlon tied in 10
th place with 3,490 points. Schneider sits 597 points behind Alaska Anchorages' Cody Thomas who leads the field of 16 heading into tomorrow. He began the day with a 10
th place finish in the 100 meter dash in 11.58 for 736 points before taking 11
th in the long jump with a mark of 6.79 meters for 764 points. Schneider then grabbed 541 points in the shot put with a mark of 10.92 meters, and 714 points in the high jump with a mark of 1.90 meters. He would close the day with an 11
th place finish in the 400 meter dash in 51.76 for 735 points.
Catie Byrd wrapped the day for Queens in the women's 10k race. She would take 13th place in 36:40.04 after entering the race seeded 19
th.
The NCAA DII Outdoor Track and Field Championships continue tomorrow in Bradenton, Fla.
