CLERMONT, Fla. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's triathlon team competed in the Women's Collegiate Triathlon National Championship today grabbing a first place finish in just their first year of competition.
Queens head coach,
Sonni Dyer, was right when he said that the Olympic/draft-legal format of triathlon suits the Royals well as they saw incoming freshman Jocelyn Bonney grab a spot on the podium at second place. Jessica Tomesek followed with a 10
th place finish, while Caroline Condon took 12
th. Incoming freshman Sina Sontowski crossed the finish line in 22
nd, and third incoming freshman Rebecca Meyerson, finished the string in 30
th.
"We displayed incredible race-plan execution today, despite being the youngest team in the field, by far, said Coach Dyer. "We had one scenario that would position our third scorer, Caroline Condon, into a tie for second with a pre-5k gap over UCLA, Marymount, and Colorado's No. 2 and No. 3, and the Queens women executed it with a race-IQ uncommon for their years. I'm happy for the championship title, of course, but as a coach I was just moved at how they did it. They won it for each other. They won it for Queens."
USA Triathlon allows a school's high school signees to compete for their school to help create support and raise awareness for the growing sport, and Queens' 2016 newcomers proved to be valuable assets to the team.
Ten schools fielded teams of three or more athletes, with Queens University of Charlotte, Marymount University and UCLA taking home the top spots.
