Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A six point swing in the final two minutes of tonight's game allowed the Barton College Bulldogs to snatch Queens University of Charlotte's championship berth at Johnson and Wales University. The Royals fell 65-64 to the Bulldogs most likely ending their season at 19-9. Barton advances to face Mount Olive College in the Conference Carolinas Tournament Championship.
After two free-throws from
Preston Newlin (Graham, N.C., Graham) put the Royals up five, 64-59, the Bulldogs would score six straight, four from the foul line to upset top-seeded Queens. Barton had come back from a 19-point deficit after not scoring a field goal until the 12:31 mark in the second. They did however stay steady from the foul line in the second connecting on 19-of-22 taking advantage of Queens' foul trouble.
The Royals were outscored 22-6 in the final seven minutes of the game closing things out much like Barton began.
The first period was a tightly contested one. Queens got hot towards the end of the half enabling them to go up by as much as 11 en route to building a nine-point half time lead on the back of a 16-7 run.
Daniel Bailey (Irmo, S.C., Hammond ) led the Royals recording a double-double on 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Antonio Stabler (Garner, N.C., Wakefield) scored 13 points, while three others added six points each. Stabler also grabbed six rebounds.
Brent Evans (Beaufort, S.C., Battery Creek) scored seven points and collected four steals.
Gerald Boston led all on the court with 29 points on 8-of-13 shooting. He was also perfect from the foul line making 13-of-13. The Bulldogs' next leading scorer was Jaren Haley with eight points. Barton shot 84.4 percent from the charity stripe this evening.
