CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Men's swimmer Jeremy Gregory has been named the male InterCon Student-Athlete of the Month for his accomplishments during the month of February. Gregory's selection makes him a two-time InterCon Student-Athlete of the Month as he was also selected for the month of October.
During the month of February, Gregory was seven-times named an All-Conference swimmer for the Bluegrass Mountain Conference (BMC). He became the first Queens male swimmer to capture a conference championship, qualified for six events at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championship and was a part of seven school records.
In his 200 butterfly conference title he not only set the school record, but also set the BMC record. In addition to his 200 fly title, Gregory won the 200 IM, being Queens first two-time conference championship.
“Jeremy led by example,” said Head Swimming Coach Jeff Dugdale. “The old saying is actions are louder than words – this is what he did winning two events and setting a conference record. The team followed his lead the entire way. Jeremy wants to be a coach so we partnered the entire season on his training and on his taper. Like Caitlin, Jeremy was a perfect fit starting our new program. Congratulations.”
Director of Sports Information Sarah Waple sat down with Jeremy Gregory to ask him a few questions.
Q: This is your second SAM award; describe the feeling of winning for a second time.
A: Words cannot describe how honored I feel to be Student-Athlete of the Month for the second time this year. I know our school is filled with outstanding student-athletes and to be chosen twice this year is indescribable. It is a good feeling to have the championship season over with for swimming so I can now divert my full attention to my academics.
Q: When you answered the questions last time, one of your program goals was to make sure your teammates were having fun, do you think you kept that up as the season came into full swing? Why do you think they are or aren't?
A: I am hoping they had fun this season and enjoyed the process. I know it is tough though to get so close to qualifying for NCAAs and not go; I have been there. On the bright side, everyone made tremendous strides and huge drops over this season, and that's fun. I hope everyone walks away pleased with this year, but not satisfied. Next year we will have even more potential, and as long as everyone keeps their head into the game we will do extraordinary things in just our second year established.
