CHARLOTTE, N.C.- In a tough year-opening meet, the Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's swimming teams challenged Division I powerhouses Duke and South Carolina at Duke's Taishoff Aquatic Center. Despite falling to both the Blue Devils and the Gamecocks, Queens used the competition to get back into action having been off since Nov. 20-21.
Individually,
Kristina Bond (Topsfield, Mass.) improved her season-best times in the 100-yard breaststroke, the 50 free and the 100 free. Bond dropped her time by three seconds in the 100 breast, 1:40.24, she improved her time in the 50 free by taking three seconds off and lowered her 100 free by nearly five seconds.
Caitlin Seed (Macedonia, Ohio) placed third in the 50 free with a time of 24.42 and fourth in the 100 free by swimming the event in 53.71. Seed clocked a time of 58.35 for fifth place in the 100 back.
The women fell to Duke by a score of 237-47 and USC by 249-24. USC received votes in this week's in the national polls.
On the men's side,
Jeremy Gregory who has already earned an NCAA A cut in the 200 fly, competed in the 100 breaststroke for the first time this year and posted a fifth-place 59.15. He also swam his first competitive 200 back, 1:56.73. In the 200 fly Gregory placed second with his 1:53.59 effort.
Felix Duchampt (Clermont Ferrand, France, Lycée Jeanne d'Arc ( Clermont Fd, France)) has made the transition from the cross country team to the swim team for the off season and made his debut in the 1000-yard event. Duchampt clocked his first event with a time of 11:36.60. He also swam in the 100 free and the 500 free.
The men were defeated 241-23 by hosts Duke and 247-41 by the 8-0 Gamecocks.
Queens will look to rebound next Friday, Jan. 21 at Lenoir-Rhyne University.
