Tournament was played in England.
CHARLOTTE, N.C.— While back home for the summer, David Bainbridge (England, Thomas Alleynes), of the Queens University of Charlotte men’s golf team found time to keep playing in order to improve his game. Bainbridge was crowned the champion of the Scratch Cup played for at Ashbourne Golf Club on July 10th. The Scratch Cup was played by the club's elite members who fought it out to be crowned king of the club.
The morning's 18 holes began at 8:00 a.m., and testing conditions saw no members break par or better for the first round. At midday, Jonathan Milne who shot a one-over-par 72 led the field while Bainbridge and Dave Barrie Jr. followed on 73 and 75, respectively.
The second round began just after 1:00 p.m., and Bainbridge could clearly be seen as the leader after the first nine holes. Bainbridge separated himself from the rest of the field with birdies at holes one, four, eight, and nine. Birdies followed on holes 11 and 13 to give a flawless back nine gross of two-under-par 34. Bainbridge completed round two with a score of 66 narrowly missing out on the amateur course record by one shot.
Bainbridge won the two round tournament with a 36 hole return of 139, a three-under-par score, winning by a record margin of 13 strokes. Finishing second and third were James Bainbridge and Dave Barrie Jr. who shot a 152 and 153, respectively.
"This feels fantastic and I can't say how honored and proud I am to win the Scratch Cup,” said Bainbridge. “The first 18 was really poor and I knew I had to buck my ideas up to stand a chance. Luckily I made a phone call to Street Hero who advised me on tweaking my grip and it did the business during the interval and I came out all guns blazing. When I came off 13 I knew the amateur course record was in sight. I was slightly really disappointed not to get it, especially with the two par 5's down the home stretch to attack but it’s an amazing feeling to lift the Cup.”
