CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Simon Stuetzel (Meinborn, Germany) took the lead from the gun setting an aggressive pace in the first heat of two in the prelims of the 1500-meters at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships this afternoon at Irwin Belk Track in Charlotte, N.C. With the top four finishers automatically moving on to Saturday’s finals, he led the pack through splits of 60.2, 61.6 and 60.4 and finished fourth in 3:46.49. The top four finishers in heat #1 were all much faster than the 2009 winning time of 3:49.83, which happened to be posted by Queens’ Michael Crouch.
Crouch, who won both the 2009 NCAA outdoor 1,500-meter title and the indoor 5,000-meter title, will have his own prelims on Friday. He competes in the prelims of the 5,000-meters at 8:35pm where he is seeded second.
