CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Queens University of Charlotte did not get a chance to improve their standings on the last day of the 2010 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship at the Sagamore Club in Noblesville, Ind. due to an NCAA administrative cut option. The field was cut to the top 15 teams and six individuals not on members of the 15-team field. Though the team did not make the cut, the Royals had one individual able to play in the last round, Ben Lasso (Falls Church, Va., Heritage Academy), and he finished the tournament in 11th place.

With thunderstorms in the forecast for Friday afternoon, the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Committee utilized the administrative cut option provided to them under the tournament’s guidelines and procedures. The administrative cut trimmed the field to 15 five-member teams (from 20 five-member teams that competed in the first three rounds) and the remaining top six individuals (in this case, seven individuals due to a tie for sixth) from the 5 five-member teams that were cut and the eight individual competitors who played the first three rounds. Play began off tees #1 and #10 at 8 a.m. and included 82 players on the course (from an original field of 108).

Lasso was just three-over-par during his final round to finish the tournament +12. He carded his best round of the tournament on the second day by shooting two-under-par and lead the field heading into the third round.

Queens finished their first-ever NCAA Championship with a three-round score of 941.

Florida Southern College and Cyril Bouniol of Abilene Christian captured the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf team and individual championships, respectively. Florida Southern entered the final round trailing Chico State by one shot in the team competition. Florida Southern carded a team score of 308 (+20) to post a four-round total of 1,207 (+55). That score was six shots better than Central Missouri (1,213, +61), which moved from fourth to second in the final round with a team score of 304 (+16). Central Missouri’s score was the second-best team score of the day, trailing only Barry University’s final round score of 297 (+9). Chico State placed third (1,214, +62), followed by defending champion Sonoma State (1,216, +64).

Bouniol (Abilene Christian) captured the national championship in the individual competition with a score of 285 (-3). After an opening-round 76, Bouniol followed with rounds of 68, 71, and 70 to pull away for a six-shot win over Central Missouri’s Justin Yoder. Matt Stauch (Florida Southern) placed third.
