Men’s golf in fifth after first round

Lasso in a four-way tie for second place

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- In their first-ever NCAA Championship the Queens men's golf team, No. 27,  doesn't seem to have any jitters finishing the first round tied for fifth place, +21, and is just 10 strokes off of leader No. 11 Nova Southeastern. South/Southeast Region Champion Ben Lasso (Falls Church, Va., Heritage Academy) is leading the Royals with a one-over-par for a four-way tie for second place. The four-round event is taking place at the Sagamore Club in Noblesville, Ind.

Lasso was one over on the front nine and two over heading into the last two holes, but two birdies gave him an even back nine to finish the day with 73 strokes. He had another birdie on the back nine and one on the front for four on the afternoon.

Ryan Sevigny (Stittsville, Ontario, Sacred Heart) was next best for the Royals by carding a 76, +4. Sevigny also had a better back nine shooting one under par with two birdies. Sevigny is tied for 20th place.

Rounding out the Queens five was Robert Andrew Hodge (Hebron, Ky., Conner), +7, David Bainbridge (England, Thomas Alleynes) and Pureum Lee (North Vancouver, B.C., Canada, Handsworth Secondary) at nine-over-par, respectively.

Ben Vertz of Nova Southeastern is leading the 108-man field with an even scorecard.

In front of the Royals are No. 3 Florida Southern, +15, No. 21 Ferris State, +17, and No. 2 Chico State, +19.

Teams start teeing off at 7:30am Tuesday morning for the second round. Lee will start for the Royals at 7:30, followed by  Bainbridge at 7:40am, Sevigny at 7:50am, Hodge at 8am and Lasso at 8:10am.
