CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Queens University of Charlotte is proud to announce
Nelson Mwangi (Kenya, Nairobi School)as the recipient of the InterCon Male Student-Athlete of the Month award for the month of the March.
Mwangi put his name in the record book during the month of March, breaking the school-record in the 800-meter with a 1:51.72 second-place finish at the NCAA National Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque.
His finish earned Queens eight points in team scoring, giving the Royals an NCAA Indoor Track national team finish of 20th place.
Just a week later at the beginning of the Royals outdoor track campaign, he posted a national provisional qualifying mark in the 800-meter at the UNC Charlotte 49er Classic. His 1:52.35 was good enough for fourth in the 77-man field, putting him in the pool for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships which will be held in Charlotte May 27th.
Royals head coach Scott Simmons raved about Mwangi's work ethic and path to success.
"Nearly two years of hard work paid off for Nelson last month and his NCAA national runner-up performance is a testament to his resistance to give up. Mwangi really was a Cinderalla story in that he qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships with only a provisional time at the last-chance meet. From the semifinals, he snuck into to the finals taking the last spot on time, and ended up nearly stealing the national title."
Looking forward, Mwangi's shifts his focus to the Conference Carolinas Championship in Banner Elk, N.C. on April 17th. Mwangi found success at last year's conference championship, winning the 800-meter and the 4 x 400-meter relay.
