Women's tennis: three added to All-Conference teams; Karpman named Coach of the Year

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte's women's tennis team (10-0, 17-0) added to their successful season Thursday night at the Conference Carolinas awards banquet; three Royals were named to All-Conference teams and head coach Brett Karpman took home the Coach of the Year award.

Voted to All-Conference teams, Elena Mileva (Sofia, Bulgaria, First Private English Language School) (First Team), Amanda Poole (Douglasville, Ga., South Paulding) (Second Team), and Morgan Roberts (Fort Pierce, Fla., Treasure Coast) (Third Team) led the Royals to a first-place finish with a combined 45-9 in singles on the season.

This is the second time Mileva has been named to the All-Conference First Team. Competing at the No. 1 flight, she finished 15-5 against the best the conference's best.  She picked up key wins against fellow All-Conference First Team members Christine Vanard and Alena Krutkina. Mileva split her time between the first and third flights during doubles action, going 11-4 on the year.

Poole's season registered as one of the best by a freshman in the conference. Owning a 13-3 record in the third flight, she picked up wins against All-Conference selections Jimena Munoz Quiroga,  Britton Bignon, Gabriela Celi,  and Freshman of the Year Abby O'Reilly.

Roberts dominated the conference at the No. 4 spot, going a perfect 10-0 en route to a 17-1 overall record. Roberts picked up two signature wins this season. The first came over then-ranked No. 22 Flager's Chelsi de Cuba in the first round of the ITA DII Southeast Regional Championships. The second came when she outlasted then-ranked No. 47 Erskine's Victoria Stephens, 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-3). Owning an 11-5 record in doubles, Roberts was the one constant on the Royals No. 1 doubles team.

Dominating throughout the 2010 campaign, Karpman has helped his young team harness their talents. With just his second recruiting class, he has transformed a program that hadn't had a winning team since 2005 into a champion. Members of the conference took notice of his ability to reach players during tough matches and rewarded his efforts with Coach of the Year honors.

The top-seeded Royals will face eight-seed Converse at the Conference Carolinas tournament held in Sumter, S.C. at 9 a.m. on Friday morning.
