CHARLOTTE, N.C.- After leading the first round with a three-over-par
Camilla Mallberg (Stockholm, Sweden, Danderyds Gymnasium) finished the 2010 Hargett Memorial Intercollegiate women's golf tournament in fifth place with a 160 scorecard. Mallberg shot an 85 in the second round and helped Queens finish seventh in the event.
The tournament, hosted by Wingate at Olde Sycamore Plantation, was won by Newberry College for the second time in the 10-year running of the event. Newberry shot 317 Tuesday to go with a Monday 320 to finish at 637, 17 strokes better than second place UNC Pembroke (654). Newberry has won five tournaments this season. Carson-Newman finished third (664), while host Wingate claimed the fourth spot (673). Twelve teams were represented in this year's event.
Queens shot 349 during the second round to pair with a first round total of 687 for the seventh place spot. The Royals finished behind Conference Carolinas member Anderson, but ahead of Pfeiffer and Mount Olive.
Julia Wennerlund (Bjarred, Sweden, Polhemskolan) finished with 172 strokes after shooting 85 and 87. Rounding out the Queens team was
Laura Belanger (Waxhaw, N.C., Parkwood), who shaved seven strokes off her first round outing,
Natalie Mirra (Boxford, Mass., Heritage Academy), and
Katie Murphy (Huntersville, N.C., North Mecklenburg).
The Royals have one more tournament, the Agnes McAmis Invitational hosted by Tusculum, before the Conference Carolinas Championship on April 17-20.
