CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Simon Stuetzel (Meinborn, Germany) finished second in the New Balance Collegiate Invitational college mile in New York City Saturday, narrowly missing the NCAA automatic qualifying mark by less than 3/10ths of a second. His 4:09.24 puts him high on the provisional list almost guaranteeing a berth to the national championships to be held in Albuquerque, N.M., on March 12-13 and sets a new Queens school record.

Stuetzel clicked off even 31-second laps before moving up from the back of the pack over the last 600-meters. He passed Eric Fernandez of Arkansas to move into second on the final lap but did not have enough to overtake the leader Patrick Russell also from Arkansas who won with a time of 4:07.17. Teammate Nelson Mwangi (Kenya, Nairobi School) was 28th overall at 4:18.84.
