CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Men's swimmer
Jeremy Gregory has been named the male InterCon Student-Athlete of the Month for his efforts during the month of October. This award is the first time a swimmer, male or female, has been selected as the InterCon Student-Athlete of the Month.
“Jeremy's leadership, performance and experience has been a valued asset to our program the first half of the season,” said Head Coach
Jeff Dugdale. “His performances have come at a time when the team needed a lift and he and I have talked about actions before words. Jeremy is doing an excellent job supporting and contributing to the winning culture that embraces Queens.”
During the month of October Gregory helped Queens win its first-ever dual meet. The Royals opened the program at Pfeiffer and Gregory won the 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly and helped the team win the 200 medley relay.
In the second dual of the season, this time against Limestone, Gregory won the 200 free and 100 fly again, but when it all came down to the final relay, the Royals were edged out by the Saints. At the Boo Bash Relays, hosted by Catawba, just a day later, Gregory's experience proved to be an invaluable asset to the Royals. With two events to go, Queens held a 12 point lead over Limestone. His lead-off 53.64 in the 100 IM propelled the Queens 4x100 IM relay onto victory, putting the meet out of reach for the second place Limestone Saints.
Gregory set numerous school records in each meet and has continued to break them as the season continues.
Members of the Sports Information Office sat down with Jeremy and asked him a few questions.
1. You are the first swimmer to win the SAM award, how does this honor feel? It is such an honor to be the first swimmer to earn the SAM award. I hope that this is a honor that my teammates will work towards each and every practice. I am blessed to be considered student athlete of the month. I know there are a lot of other athletes who work just as hard as I do, I am honored to have been chosen.
2. You have a chance to create a strong program in the first year for swimming, what doe that feel like to you? Any added pressure? It's a great feeling to know that I have a chance to be apart of a first year program. I am truly blessed to have been given this opportunity and I plan to utilize it to its full potential. I don't think there is any added pressure, we have had a blast the last couple months working hard and improving. My teammates have made this really easy on me, they show that they want to improve and make strides to jump to the next level in the sport. I absolutely love Jeff and the other guys, I have not ever been this happy apart of a program as I am now.
3. What are your goals for the program? My main goal for the program is to make sure my teammates are having fun. I had a hard time realizing this when I first started out. Fun swimming leads to fast swimming. I'd also like to see a tradition of every Royal swimmer to always strive to meet and exceed their potential, both in the classroom and the pool.
4. What are your career goals? My career goals include finishing up my BA degree and getting my masters. Then I look forward to hopefully becoming a college coach once my swimming career is finished.
