MLK Day of Service catered to Right Moves for Youth.
CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens Univerisity of Charlotte volleyball team volunteered on Martin Luther King Day to help the Office of Multicultural Affairs give back to the community. The MLK Day of Service set out with a goal of providing access for and enriching lives of students participating in Right Moves for Youth.
Right Moves for Youth is a local organization that is set out to reduce the occurance of student drop outs in Mecklenburg County. The organization is available to students from grade four to grade 12. They collaborate with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Country Schools, law enforcement agencies and other community partners to help students improve and succeed in and outside of the classroom.
The Office of Multicultural fo Affairs here at Queens had multiple stations set up to help the students learn about the things Dr. King fought to change. More than 70 students, faculty and staff showed up to lend a helping hand.
Members of the Royals volleyball team worked a station located in the Watkins Art Gallery called Bursting Stereotypes. Their task was to teach the students what stereotypes were and the negative effects they have on people. In the station's final task, each student was given a balloon and asked to write on it what their personal examples of stereotypes were. Finally each student popped their balloon bursting the stereotype.
The Queens University of Charlote community is a service community and members of the athletic department look to give a helping hand whenever possible. For more information on
