Christiaan Lee-Daigle took home the tournament win on the men's side.
SUMTER, S.C.- Christiaan Lee-Daigle (Tecumseh, Ontario, L'Essor Secondary School) defeated Nandor Solymosi of Lees-McRae College in the championship match of the Conference Carolinas Individual Tennis Tournament. Queens University of Charlotte hosted the tournament in Sumter, S.C. at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
Head men's and women's tennis coach Brett Karpman led his programs to winning a combined 43 matches in the three day event. The tournament was set up for the players to play in three flighted draws.
On the men's side, reigning Conference Carolinas freshman of the year Lee-Daigle was the number two seed. He defeated the number one seed in the tournament. Solymosi was the reigning player of the year and is currently ranked 18th in the country. This was a huge win for Lee-Daigle and he is the first men's player in the history of Queens tennis to earn the title.
The women showed their depth by placing three players in the semi finals of B- draw. Elena Mileva (Sofia, Bulgaria, First Private English Language School) beat Kaitlyn Blakey (Keller, Tex., Keller) in the semi-finals only to be beaten by teammate Morgan Roberts (Fort Pierce, Fla., Treasure Coast) in the finals. This was Roberts first event as a Royal and her win made her the first Queens women's player to win an event in the school's history.
In doubles play action, Erin Williams (Arden, N.C., T.C. Roberson) and Christina Engelberth (Stockholm, Sweden, Pendleton School IMG) advanced to the finals of the B draw doubles. The duo lost in a very close contest but became the first women’s doubles team to reach a final in our school's history.
Christina Engelberth and Blakey were very impressive winning 5 matches each respectively throughout the event.
The Royals tennis teams will be back in action this weekend in the ITA Regional tournament in Sumter, S.C.
