CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Queens University of Charlotte Department of Athletics is pleased to announce the InterCon Female Student-Athlete of the Month for the month of April is softball player Kari Kmetic (Milwaukie, Ore., Putnam).
“Kari is a natural leader who holds her teammates to a high standard,” said head coach Stacey Schramm. “She has been looked upon to bring the team together and someone who we know is going to leave it all on the field.”
Kmetic, a senior, was batting .365 for the month with 23 hits, two doubles, eight home runs and four walks. She recorded a team high 19 RBI and scored 14.
Of Kmetic’s eight homers, four were hit in the Conference Carolinas Championship Tournament. Against the No. 2 seed Mount Olive, Kmetic hit two home runs to lift Queens over the Trojans 5-0 to advance to the title game. In the Championship game, Kmetic’s has another two home runs to help Queens stay in the game, one they were behind in until the sixth inning.
Following the conclusion of the conference tournament Kmetic was named the tournament MVP.
Kmetic will graduate in December with a degree in psychology.
Members of the sports information office caught up with Kari and asked her a few questions:
How does it feel to be the InterConStudent-Athlete of the Month?
Very exciting and I feel that I have worked hard to be where I am at. This is a great honor that I will remember for the rest of my life!
Why did you choose to attend Queens?
Softball
What are your career goals?
After school would like to become a substance abuse counselor, or work with juvenile delinquency children
What does it take to be academically successful at Queens?
Going to classes everyday and actually doing assignments
How do you manage your demanding schedule?
Late nights and get work done early
What is your ritual before taking a test?
Eat breakfast and quick review
Any rituals before a game?
Not really before but have to do them for the game- same two sports bras, ribbons, music, headbands, and necklace
What is your favorite quote?
Livin’ and Lovin’, life goes by to fast for us to be mad all the time so SMILE everyday is a good day!
What are your goals for your team this season?
TO win REGIONALS, and keep playing like we are!
What are your favorite softball memories here at Queens?
Well this year was winning conference tournament and how it took everyone on the team to accomplish that!
What is the most rewarding part about being a student-athlete?
Being able to have 12 really good friends that you can count on!!!
What is one fun fact people don’t know about you?
Well some know but I have a fake tooth, and all the girls would love for me to play one game without it.
