CHARLOTE, N.C.- Queens University of Charlotte is pleased to announce softball athlete Chantel Dodge (Shalimar, Fla., Choctawatchee) is the InterCon Student-Athlete of the Month for the month of March.

“As a freshman, Chantel has a huge impact on the success of the softball team,” said head softball coach Stacey Schramm. “Chantel is comfortable with her role, never gets intimidated, and physically shows a strong presence when she is on the mound.”

During the month of March Dodge has a record of 6-3 and pitched 68 innings. In the 68 innings, she gave up just 48 hits and struck out 96 batters. On March 8, Dodge threw a no-hitter leading Queens to s 2-0 win over Lander University. Against Lander and Chowan, March 21, she threw her game-high 16 strikeouts.

At the plate, she recorded her first homerun at Queens in grand fashion, knocking one over the fence for a grand slam. The four wins she drove in gave Queens a 4-2 win over then ranked No. 17 Francis Marion University.

“Chantel has the best attitude, is very coachable, and someone who I see having a very bright future here at Queens, both on the diamond and in the classroom,” said Schramm.

Members of the sports information office caught up with Chantel and asked her a few questions:

How does it feel to be Student-Athlete of the month?
It is a great honor to be named student athlete of the month.  I feel like my team as a whole has worked so hard to achieve everything that we have and I am honored to get a chance to do my part when playing with them.

Why did you choose to attend Queens?
I come from a small town in the state of Florida and the city of Charlotte offered so many more options for me that when Queens contacted me I was excited to get a chance to live in a big city and go to a smaller university that offers so many great opportunities.

What are your career goals?
My goal is to major in political science with a concentration in pre-law and international studies, then after that I plan on going to law school to become a lawyer.

What does it take to be academically successful at Queens?
A lot of hard work and dedication!  The professors are so great here and really try to help you with everything that they can, because it is difficult with my softball schedule.

How do you manage your demanding schedule?
It’s very difficult but I am here to get an education and play softball so I get all of that done and still somehow find time to sleep as well. =)

What is your favorite quote?
Live the life you love, Love the life you live.

What are your goals for your team this season?
To win conference and make an unforgettable season for our great seniors.

What are your favorite softball memories here at Queens?
Hitting my first collegiate homerun/grand slam and the Halloween haunted trail that we went on as a team.

What is one fun fact people don’t know about you?
A lot of people say I am a hippie, but I just really like tie-die and things from the 70s.
