CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The National Distance Running Summit, held on the campus of Queens University of Charlotte on January 3-4, brought together over 100 coaches from across the United States and Canada.
The Summit was highlighted by two-time U.S. Olympic Distance Coach Dr. Joe Vigil and Team Running USA's Terrence Mahon whose talks focused on the steps necessary for American distance runners to regain their prominence in Olympic and World Championship competition.
“Each (speaker) gave rich, useful and practical info and allowed us a view into their world of coaching, high school, NCAA, and professional,” said Mark Driscoll, head coach at Carolina Day School. “I learned a great deal in just two days and I know I will be reviewing my notes for weeks, months and years to come.”
The participants and lecture staff gained unique insight into Olympic success when Romanian National Coach Valeriu Tomescu shared his thoughts on the training of Beijing Olympic marathon gold medalist Constantina Tomescu-Dita.
The summit, directed by Queens coach Scott Simmons, was sponsored by Asics, UCS, Born To Run: The Film and the Charlotte Running Company.
