COACH'S CORNER
"We are disappointed with the result because we created a great number of clear opportunities to score," said
Oliver Carias. "Scoring three goals on the road against a quality opponent like Virginia is not easy. I'm extremely proud of our performance, our mentality, and the way we competed. We never quit, continued to believe in our style of play, and kept creating chances until the final whistle. I'm proud of our team and the way we represented Queens tonight."
HOW IT HAPPENED
The match started with a bang as in the fifth minute Virginia got on the scoreboard, but Queens stayed resilient. Just over a minute later, the Royals were awarded a corner kick to be taken by Gabriel Duenas. After a few deflections, the ball found the foot of
Iker Erazo who scored his fifth goal of the season to even the score.
Virginia quickly bounced back with a pair of goals before halftime, going into the intermission with a 3-1 lead.
Despite the score, each team had nine shots in the first half with the match ultimately ending in a narrow 15-14 advantage for the Cavaliers. The Royals applied pressure on goalkeeper Caleb Tunks throughout the night as he totaled five saves.
Joseph Van Straten scored his first goal of the season off a free kick taken by
Brock Gramann in the 82nd minute. Gramann sent a long ball into the box, connecting with
Oliver Kneer, who flicked a header to Van Straten for the goal.
Queens added another with less than two minutes remaining when
Rodrigo Canovas crossed the ball into the box from a similar spot, finding
David Perez, who assisted a goal by
Michael Tzimoulis.
